How to Prepare for Wisdom Teeth Removal: A Step-by-Step Guide

Wisdom teeth are the third and final molars to develop, usually coming in between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people eat and chew normally without their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are often removed because many people do not have enough room for them to grow properly. When they become trapped or difficult to clean, they can lead to pain, infection, cavities, or damage to nearby teeth.

If you are preparing for wisdom teeth removal, here are some helpful tips to ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery.

Step 1: Schedule Your Consultation and Understand the Plan

The first step in the process is a consultation with your oral surgeon to determine if wisdom teeth removal is in your best interest. A personalized treatment plan will be created after a clinical evaluation along with digital imaging to assess the size and position of your wisdom teeth. Anesthesia and sedation options will be discussed to determine the best way to keep you comfortable during the procedure. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before the next step in the process.

Step 2: Plan for Surgery Day Logistics

The following steps are an essential part of the preparation process:

  • Arranging transportation. If any form of sedation or anesthesia is used (with the exception of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide), you will need to arrange a ride to and from your appointment. For deeper levels of sedation, it is helpful to have someone at home with you after the surgery to provide care while you rest.
  • What to wear and bring to the appointment. It is best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to your appointment. Bring your insurance information and any necessary paperwork with you.
  • Fasting instructions and medication guidelines. Your oral surgeon will provide you with pre-appointment instructions, including how to take any necessary medications. If you are going to be placed under IV sedation, you cannot have anything to eat or drink for at least 6 hours before your appointment.
  • Preparing your home for a comfortable recovery. Determine where you will rest after your procedure. It is important to keep your head elevated for the first 3-4 days to minimize swelling. Recliners are ideal, but propping your head with pillows is also effective.

Step 3: Stock Up on Recovery Essentials

During your recovery, you will be more comfortable and heal quicker if you have the following supplies on hand:

  • Soft foods. Eat soft foods for the first few days following your wisdom teeth removal procedure. This includes things like jello, pudding, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and non-chunky soup. Sticking to cold foods helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. Allow warm foods to cool completely before consuming.
  • Hydration options. The best option for hydration is water for the first 24 hours. After this, you may try drinks like juice, herbal tea, smoothies, and sports drinks. Sip from a cup rather than using a straw to avoid dry socket.
  • Ice packs. Applying ice to the sides of the face and jaw can reduce swelling. Alternate 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours.
  • Gauze. Some bleeding is normal, which can be managed with gauze. Replace gauze if it becomes saturated and continue to do so until the bleeding stops and the gauze comes out clean.
  • Prescribed medications. Take your medications as prescribed by your oral surgeon. Pick them up prior to your procedure if possible to avoid waiting uncomfortably.

Your Path to a Smooth and Comfortable Recovery

Being prepared for the day of your procedure will help ensure a stress-free procedure and a more comfortable recovery. Have the supplies and foods you need on hand, and plan for a caregiver who can drive you and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal

How long does it take to recover from wisdom teeth removal?

You will need to rest at home for the first 24-48 hours before resuming regular activities. You should experience soft tissue healing within 1-2 weeks.

Is wisdom teeth removal painful?

We take every possible step to ensure your comfort. From local anesthesia to sedation, we provide a variety of options to keep you comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. Afterwards, we prescribe medication to help manage any discomfort you may experience.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is a painful condition that occurs when the blood clot that protects the area after a tooth is removed comes out too early, leaving the bone and nerves exposed and causing pain. This occurs anywhere from 3-5 days after surgery and is usually seen with removal of lower wisdom teeth. Please call our office if you think you are having an episode of dry socket.

How can I avoid dry socket?

Do not smoke or vape after surgery. Do not use a straw for several days after the surgery. Do not aggressively spit or rinse. Eat soft foods. Maintain good oral hygiene and follow your oral surgeon’s post-operative care instructions.
